Space station shifts its orbit to make speedy crew rendezvous possible

For more than 30 years, Russian spaceships have taken two days to dock with their target ??but on Thursday, the travel time for a Soyuz capsule carrying three spacefliers to the International Space Station is being trimmed to six hours.

Has the Soyuz suddenly become speedier? Not really.

The Soyuz itself won't fly any faster when it's sent into space at 4:43 p.m. ET from Russia's Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. It won't have any fundamentally new or improved guidance and navigation system. "All the systems of the vehicle are the same, but the work is more intense," Russian cosmonaut Pavel Vinogradov, the Soyuz's commander, said last week during a news briefing. "There are no new systems or modes in the vehicle, but the coordination work of the crew should be better."

This faster flight plan is possible only because someone else is doing the real work. The space station itself has shifted its position to be nearer to the Soyuz when that spacecraft goes into orbit. It is quite literally moving itself right in front of the speeding Soyuz.


The rapid rendezvous procedure has already been tested twice with robotic supply flights, but this is the first time it's been used with a crewed spacecraft. If it works, the crew should be docking with the station at 10:31 p.m. ET Thursday, taking the fastest ride to an orbital destination since NASA's Skylab missions, 40 years ago.

Hunter and hunted
Chasing down a target in the trackless void of space is not as simple as merely catching sight of it and thrusting towards it. The inflexible rules of orbital mechanics ??motion along orbital paths ? demand precise timing of critical course changes on the part of the vehicle that's doing the chasing.

For any space rendezvous, the first critical time is the moment when the chaser?s launch pad passes below the target?s circular orbit. If the chaser is launched during this moment and heads in a direction parallel to the target's orbital course, it winds up more or less in the same orbital plane as the target. That's the "planar window" for a launch.

But there's another critical timing requirement, having to do with how far ahead the target is when the chaser enters orbit. The target could be at any point in the circular path it follows around Earth, but it's important to choose the right point for launching the chaser.

The numbers give you an idea of the scale of the problem: The space station travels in a circular orbit that averages around 224 miles (360 kilometers) in altitude, and the chaser spacecraft are usually launched into initial orbits averaging around 143 miles (230 kilometers). That lower orbit is faster, both because gravity is slightly stronger there, and because the radius is smaller, which makes each circuit shorter.

For that difference in average altitude, a typical chaser spacecraft will catch up with the station at a rate of 560 mph (900 kilometers per hour). So if the chaser starts out 5,600 miles (9,000 kilometers) behind the station in its orbit, it will take about 10 hours to overtake the station. If it?s 16,800 miles (27,000 kilometers) behind, it would take 30 hours. And it might be even farther.

Flexibility is key
If you have a long period of time available for making your rendezvous ? say, one or two days???you have more flexibility for launch opportunities, even if your chaser spacecraft starts out lagging far behind the station. Mission designers prefer to pick launch days on which the lag falls within a certain range. If it?s relatively far away, the chaser stays lower and faster for a longer period, to make up the lag. If the target is not so far away, the crew flies their ship higher sooner, to slow down the approach rate and arrive at the target at the same desired time.

The fast-rendezvous scenario, in contrast, has very little flexibility. The Soyuz has only a few hours to vary its altitude in order to accommodate a range of possible target distances. The range of acceptable distances between the chaser spacecraft and the space station is known as the "phase window." For a fast rendezvous, the phase window shrinks from what's typically about half of each orbit to as little as 5 percent of each orbit.

There are only a few launch opportunities when the precise time of the planar window also falls within the narrow slot of the phase window. That makes it harder to select an appropriate launch date for a fast rendezvous.

The job was easier back in the '60s, for the early rendezvous missions conducted by NASA and the Soviets. That's because those missions involved launching the target satellite first, and then launching the chaser no more than a few hours later. In such cases, the lag distance for the chaser's launch could be customized to fit the short range for a quick docking.

These days, the only way to approximate that required narrow slot in the sky is to have the International Space Station do an engine burn. This can push the station ahead or behind in its orbit, so that it happens to be at the proper distance at precisely the time when the Soyuz is launched.

That critical orbital maneuver took place a week ago: On March 21, a Progress cargo craft attached to the station fired its thrusters for 11 minutes and 13 seconds, pushing its orbital altitude from 253.5 to 255 miles (408 to 410.5 kilometers). It's just a mile and a half, but it's enough to ensure that the station will be in the right place, assuming that the Soyuz launches at the right time.

For all the virtuosity of the cosmonauts in their steering, the factor that makes the briefer trip at all possible is the target generously maneuvering itself right into the chaser?s sights. And for every quick rendezvous in the future, by Russian or American or other orbital vehicles, the same elaborate target line-up will be required.

Potential Chagas vaccine candidate shows unprecedented efficacy

Scientists are getting closer to a Chagas disease vaccine, something many believed impossible only 10 years ago. Research from the Sealy Center for Vaccine Development at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston has resulted in a safe vaccine candidate that is simple to produce and shows a greater than 90 percent protection rate against chronic infection in mice.

In a paper published online in PLOS ONE, the researchers describe how they identified and tested potential Trypanosoma cruzi (also known as T. cruzi or Chagas disease) antigen candidates and delivery models to establish the safety and efficacy of a vaccine formulation known asTcVac3. This potential vaccine could halt the irreversible heart and organ damage that afflicts approximately 30 percent of those infected with Chagas.

"This signals a scientific breakthrough ? unprecedented vaccine efficacy for a common parasitic disease with no cure for chronic sufferers," said lead author Nisha Garg, PhD, professor of microbiology, immunology and pathology at UTMB. "If this vaccine proves practical, it could be approved in as few as five years for use in canines, which are reservoir hosts of the disease. As many as 20 percent of dogs may be infected in Texas alone, developing the same heart conditions as humans but mistaken by vets for heartworm."

The study also provides further evidence that a human Chagas vaccine is possible, a topic of debate among some who still believe that Chagas heart disease is the result of an autoimmune disorder, she added.

T. cruzi, transmitted by the triatomine insect, or "kissing bug," is prevalent in almost all Latin American countries and is becoming more common in the U.S. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 10 million people ? mostly children ? are infected worldwide. Approximately 13,000 die each year from the complications of Chagas-induced heart disease ? a result of the chronic infection Garg and her team aim to vaccinate against. It is estimated that the global economic burden of Chagas is about $7 billion a year.

TcVac3: The Path of Discovery

TcVac3 is the result of rigorous computational/bioinformatics analysis and screening of the T. cruzi genome for potential candidate antigens over several years by Garg and her team. These analyses led the researchers to three potential antigens (TcG1, TcG2 and TcG4) for further investigation.

Next, they began testing these antigens and potential vaccine delivery models ? how the components are arranged in the actual vaccine ? to determine the best approaches.

Early experiments proved that delivery of the candidate antigens by a DNA-prime/protein boost approach, along with co-delivery of IL-12 and GM-CSF cytokine adjuvants meant to enhance the immune response, was effective in generating antibody and T cell responses capable of providing more than 90 percent control of acute infection and parasite burden in infected mice.

Recognizing, however, that this vaccine delivery model was quite complex, the scientists sought to simplify the vaccine using a DNA-prime/Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA)-boost approach ? a delivery model that offers many advantages: it can accommodate multiple foreign genes in its genome; may be administered by a variety of routes; has an excellent safety record; and has been shown to generate immune responses to a variety of foreign antigens. MVA itself can act as an adjuvant since it provides a signal to the innate immune system and can boost T cells.

Based on preliminarystudies by the researchers that showed this delivery model to be potent, the scientists next tested the protective efficacy of TcVac3, constituted of just the TcG2 and TcG4 candidates and lacking the adjuvants, delivered by the DNA/MVA approach.

With two doses of the vaccine, the mice with TcVac3-induced antibodies exhibited 92 to 96 percent protection against chronic infection. They found that the DNA/MVA approach increased the vaccine efficacy enough to omit one of the antigens and the adjuvants, making it a much simpler but still highly effective vaccine.

"Because Chagas is most prevalent in developing countries, it is essential that a potential vaccine be inexpensive to develop and easy to deliver," said Garg. "TcVac3 accomplishes this goal, making it not just an effective candidate, but an ideal one."

Future research will determine if the vaccine composition can be simplified even further. In addition, the scientists are already conducting related trials in canines. Garg and her team are also working on pre-clinical trials of human patient samples, testing for immune response in patients that are already infected but not showing signs of chronic disease. Results of both studies are anticipated later this year.

Bank of America just rolled out a new type of reward credit card for people who carry a balance. The BankAmericard Better Balance Rewards card gives customers $25 cash back each quarter if they pay more than the minimum required each month and make that payment on time.

?There was definitely a need for this that was not being met,? said Titi Cole, Bank of America?s senior executive for retail products. ?It rewards customers for what they?re trying to do, which is pay off their balances and manage their debt responsibly, and hopefully deepens their relationship with us.?

The card has no annual fee and the interest rate is zero percent for the first 12 months on new purchases and balance transfers made during the first 60 days.

Those who have another relationship with the bank, such as a checking or savings account, will get an extra $5 bonus each quarter they qualify for cash back.

?I actually like this card and I don?t say that about a lot of credit cards,? said John Ulzheimer, president of consumer education at SmartCredit.com. ?Anytime a bank is willing to give me free money, I?ll gladly take it. And that $25 a quarter really starts to add up over time.?

Other consumer advocates who?ve looked at the card agree: It rewards people for doing the right thing.

?Giving people an incentive to reduce their debit rather than an incentive to increase spending is definitely an improvement,? said Tom Feltner, director of financial services at the Consumer Federation of America.

To get the $25 cash each quarter, cardholders must make more than the minimum payment each month. And that?s the key to paying down credit card debt for those who can?t pay the balance in full.

?Only making the minimum payment is a treadmill to nowhere,? said Greg McBride, senior financial analyst at Bankrate.com. ?It pays down the balance at a snail?s pace and even on a modest balance; the interest charges can multiply over time and be several times larger than the original balance you carried.?

Bank of America plans to market the Better Balance Rewards card to its current customers through information at the branches and targeted marketing.

?They may already have a card with us and this could be their second card,? Cole told me. ?Or they may be carrying a balance with a competitor and now we can offer them a more compelling value proposition than what they have.?

As with any credit card offer, the devil is in the details.

?No interest for the first year is a great deal for people who carry a balance, but after that your interest rate is pegged to your creditworthiness,? noted Gerri Detweiler, personal finance expert at Credit.com. ?Then it could go as high as 21.99 percent.?

Also, there?s still a penalty for making a late payment: a fee of up to $35 and that zero percent interest period will disappear. The new rate could be as high as 29.99 percent.

Is this card for you?
If you carry a credit card balance that you can?t pay off, this might be the way to go, especially if you have the discipline to pay more than the minimum and make those payments on time each month. You?ll get 12 months to tackle the balance with no finance charges.

The key is to keep the new spending in check ? even with a zero percent interest rate ? or you could be worse off than you started.

?That is always the risk with a no-interest grace period,? said Gail Cunningham with the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. In theory, it?s a great tool. In practice, it can trip you up if you?re not financially disciplined.?

Before you apply for this or any other card, consider your options.

?If you?re really after zero percent interest on either a balance transfer or on introductory purchases, there are cards that offer that well beyond the 12-month mark,? McBride told me. ?So it?s important to shop around and find the card that?s best suited for you need.?

The National Science Board (NSB) has announced that accomplished educator Jo Anne Vasquez is the recipient of its 2013 Public Service Award for an individual.

Vasquez is known nationally and internationally for her efforts to create sustainable change in teaching K-12 science.

"Jo Anne Vasquez has been and continues to be a strong and convincing voice for classroom teachers, and has learned first-hand the art and science of teaching in the K-12 classroom," says NSB Chairman Dan Arvizu. "We are proud to name her as the recipient of the 2013 NSB Public Service Award presented to an individual."

Following many years in K-12 education, Vasquez became Arizona State University's Director of Professional Development and Policy Outreach for its Center for Research on Education in Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology.

Vasquez has served as President of the National Science Teachers Association, the National Science Education Leadership Association, and the International Council of Associations for Science Education.

Her leadership roles have helped her to promote professional development for K-12 mathematics and science teachers.

Throughout her career, she has mentored thousands of teachers, for which she has earned many awards, including science education's highest, the Robert H. Carlton Award.

Author of several science textbooks and books on science teaching, Vasquez's latest publication, STEM Lesson Essentials for Grades 3-8, was inspired by research she conducted while serving as a member of the NSB.

Vasquez contributed to the 2007 NSB report, National Action Plan for Addressing the Critical Needs of the U.S. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education System. She was an NSB member at the time.

"The report has been pivotal in highlighting the importance of STEM education on a national level," says Arvizu.

Vasquez holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, a Master of Science degree in early childhood education, and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction.

She's currently vice president and program director of Teacher and Curriculum Initiatives for the Helios Education Foundation. Its mission is to increase undergraduate enrollment in Arizona and Florida with an emphasis on STEM.

The NSB Public Service Award honors individuals and groups who have made substantial contributions to increasing the public understanding of science and engineering in the United States.

These contributions may be in areas with the potential to contribute to the public understanding of and appreciation for science and engineering--including mass media, education, training programs and/or entertainment.

Vasquez will receive the NSB Public Service Award for an individual medal and certificate at an awards ceremony and dinner on May 9, 2013, at the U.S. State Department, Washington, D.C., along with recipients of the NSB's Vannevar Bush Award and the National Science Foundation's Alan T. Waterman Award.

In a development that could reverberate throughout the entertainment industry, a New York Supreme Court judge has taken the bold step of enjoining the broadcast of Lifetime Television's telefilm "Romeo Killer: The Christopher Porco Story," which was scheduled to air Saturday.

The film is based on the true story of the murder of Peter Porco and the attempted murder of his wife, Joan Porco; the resulting criminal investigation; and the prosecution and conviction of their son, Christopher Porco, for those crimes. The case drew national news attention, and Lifetime's planned film drew a lawsuit from the convicted killer, who alleges that "Romeo Killer" violates his rights.

On Tuesday, Judge Robert Muller issued an injunction that not only prevents the airing but also prohibits Lifetime from promoting the film, which stars Matt Barr as Chris Porco, Lolita Davidovich as his mother and Eric McCormack as the case's lead detective. In reaction, Lifetime is filing an emergency application to vacate or stay the injunction on appeal. According to court documents, the cable network says it stands to lose more than $1 million if it is not given immediate appellate relief.

As of Wednesday morning, there was no mention of "Romeo Killer" on Lifetime's homepage, and its promotional links to the telefilm had been disabled.

Throughout the years, publicity rights has become a bigger and bigger issue in entertainment. The laws vary by state but generally protect an individual's likeness from being exploited. Increasingly, the boundaries between an individual's right to protect an image and First Amendment allowances on free expression aren't particularly clear, and some lawyers wonder if the confusion might chill speech.

This has the potential of being one of those cases.

Porco sued Lifetime, claiming that the film violated New York Civil Rights Section 51, the state's version of publicity rights, which allows a person to seek redress if his or her "name, portrait, picture or voice is used ? for advertising purposes or for the purposes of trade without the written consent first obtained."

The jailed killer, who hasn't seen "Romeo Killer," ?alleged that the movie was a ?substantially fictionalized account ... about plaintiff and the events that led to his incarceration."

Lifetime counters that "the essential elements of the movie are true and accurate and based on court and police records, interviews with persons involved, and historical and other documents."

The cable network also points out that Porco's story has been told on CBS' "48 Hours Mystery" and the TruTV series "Forensic Files."

Without even getting a summons, Lifetime now has been ordered to not air its telefilm. Muller has issued an injunction, finding that "Defendant appears to concede that the movie is fictionalized." The judge has said that he is "not persuaded" that monetary damages would be sufficient redress and also has waved away Lifetime's concern that the injunction represents a "prior restraint" on its free speech rights.

According to an appeal that Lifetime is filing -- obtained by The Hollywood Reporter -- "The Supreme Court?s order is unprecedented and would cause grave and irreparable damage not just to Lifetime but to the constitutional protections for speech."

Lifetime cites many landmark rulings that are supposed to restrain judges from making prior restraints on free expression and says: "This is not a case where national security concerns are in jeopardy. It is not even a case involving potential irreparable injury from the disclosure of trade secrets or other confidential information; it involves a movie based on the public facts of a murder prosecution. While plaintiff may not want the story of his crime repeated in a television movie, the constitutional protection of speech and press on matters of public concern flatly prevent the issuance of an order enjoining the broadcast of the movie."

The defendant also makes the case that its film fits the "newsworthy" exceptions to New York's publicity rights law and that claims of a story being "fictionalized" don't overcome that.

Lifetime also says that Porco hasn't made a sufficient case about the irreparable harm he'll face if the film is aired and says that the balance of hardships tips entirely in its favor.

After spending $2 million to acquire the rights to the film and nearly $1 million to promote the movie as "appointment viewing," Lifetime says an injunction would have a "devastating financial and reputational impact" on the network, that it "will lead to a reluctance among cable affiliates and advertisers to spend money on Lifetime," that TV viewers "will come to see Lifetime as unreliable and not trustworthy" when they find that the program doesn't air as scheduled, that advertisers will have to be made whole, that local cable operators will be out from their own investments in advertising and more.

Says the network, "Even now, Lifetime employees are scrambling to comply with the Supreme Court?s order at great cost in human and financial resources."

Researchers link cancer to failures in chromosome protection for the first time

A study published today in the journal Nature Genetics explores a new mechanism that may contribute to the development of several tumours, including Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia, a type of cancer that affects more than a thousand new patients in Spain each year.

This work, led by researchers Carlos L?pez-Ot?n, from the University Institute of Oncology at the University of Oviedo; El?as Campo, from the Hospital Cl?nic/University of Barcelona; and Mar?a Blasco, the Director of the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), represents a significant milestone for the Spanish Consortium in the study of the Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia Genome.

"Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia is the most frequent leukaemia in Western countries," says L?pez-Ot?n, adding that, "Once the most frequent genetic and epigenetic changes in its development have been decoded, it's necessary to discover the biochemical mechanisms altered by those changes, in order to be able to improve the diagnosis and treatment of this disease."

Thus, continuing the work from previous studies led by Campo and L?pez-Ot?n published in Nature and Nature Genetics over the past two years, the researchers concentrated on the mutations affecting POT1, one of the genes involved in the protection of the ends of chromosomes, the telomeres.

This is the first time that a gene with this function has appeared mutated in a human cancer. Blasco says: "We have been studying telomere biology for a long time, given that alterations in telomere maintenance are associated with cancer and ageing. Although the mechanisms used by tumour cells to alter their telomeres have been identified, POT1 mutations reveal yet another, previously unknown route."

Each chromosome has, at its extremes, in its telomeres, a protective hood made up of proteins, and POT1 is the staple that fixes it in place, joining it to the telomeric DNA. All of the mutations discovered in POT1 prevent this gene from fulfilling its function. The DNA at the end of the chromosome is therefore left without its protective cover. The study of the biochemical pathway that leads from these abnormalities to the uncontrolled growth of B lymphocytes can provide important clues for the understanding of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and cancer in general.

ONE OF THE MOST FREQUENTLY MUTATED GENES IN LEUKAEMIA

Furthermore, after analysing the genome of 341 chronic lymphocytic leukaemia patients ?comparing for each case the genes from normal healthy cells with those of tumour cells?, researchers have discovered that POT1 is one of the most frequently mutated genes in this illness.

Prior results from the Spanish Consortium for the study of the Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia Genome had already shown that more than a thousand mutations are involved in this disease, and that each patient has a unique combination of hundreds of them. One of the most unexpected findings of the Consortium's studies is the wide genetic and molecular diversity of the disease. The different mutated genes identify relatively small subgroups of patients with diverse disease characteristics. In fact, the most frequently-repeated mutations are only present in 15% of patients. Despite that, identifying them represents a great advance, because it is a step towards the goal of personalised therapies, adapted to the genetic profile of each individual tumour.

In the study published today, the researchers have found that 3.5% of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia show POT1 mutations, but this figure rises to 9% in a subgroup of patients suffering from an especially aggressive form of the disease. In this way, the study identifies POT1 as one of the most important genes for this disease.

As Campo concludes, "Patients with POT1 mutations belong to the group that has the worst prognosis. Therapeutic intervention affecting this pathway could, therefore, help treat a group of patients whose clinical outcome is currently very poor."

Mich. woman, 75, convicted of murdering grandson

PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) ? A 75-year-old woman was convicted Tuesday of second-degree murder for killing her teenage grandson last spring in her Detroit-area home, after jurors rejected her claim that she shot him six times in self-defense.

Sandra Layne cried quietly when she heard the verdict, which was delivered during the first full day of jury deliberations. She was also found guilty of using a firearm during a felony and likely faces at least 14 years in prison for the death of her grandson, Jonathan Hoffman.

Defense attorney Jerome Sabbota said later that Layne was "devastated" by the verdict.

But some family members had harsh words. Hoffman's mother, Jennifer Hoffman, said her mother was a "monster" who deserved to go to prison.

"I'm glad she's put away and can't do harm to anyone else," Jennifer Hoffman said outside court. "He was a great kid and didn't deserve this."

His father, Michael Hoffman, said the verdict was a "final vindication for my son."

As Layne was handcuffed and being led out of court, some family members sitting with her 87-year-old husband, Fred, waved in a show of support. But she couldn't make eye contact because there was a deputy in between blocking the view.

Layne fired 10 shots at her 17-year-old grandson, striking him six times over a six-minute span during an argument last May in her home in West Bloomfield Township. She never disputed that she killed him, but she testified that she did so because he had hit her and she feared for her safety.

The evidence included a recording of Jonathan Hoffman's desperate call to 911 in which he pleads for help, even as more shots are fired.

"My grandma shot me. I'm going to die. Help. I got shot again," he told the dispatcher as he gasped for air.

Jurors declined to comment following the verdict, but they told attorneys during a private meeting that the 911 call was crucial to their decision. It revealed that Layne had left Hoffman bleeding but then returned with more gunfire.

"They said they played it over and over and over again" in the jury room, prosecutor Paul Walton said. "One of the big things they said is when you hear the shots on the (call) there's no struggle."

Sabbota said jurors found the "911 call was critical."

The Oakland County jury had a choice of first-degree murder or lesser charges, or it could have acquitted Layne based on her argument of self-defense.

In his closing argument, Walton told jurors that Layne never rushed out of the West Bloomfield Township home, despite claiming to be afraid of her grandson, and never called for an ambulance to help him after the shooting. She said she shot him after Hoffman struck her during a heated argument about money and a plan to flee Michigan because of a failed drug test.

"I wanted him to pay attention to me. He had to listen. It wasn't a conversation. It was arguing. Swearing," Layne said in tearful testimony last week, explaining why she pulled out a gun.

Walton called Layne's story "fanciful." He pointed out that she never complained to police about being attacked. A hospital nurse who examined her after her arrest said Layne had no injuries and spoke lovingly about Hoffman.

Sabbota asked jurors to view the incident through the eyes of a woman in her 70s. He said Layne was taking care of a teen who had used drugs and brought strangers to the home. Hoffman's parents were living in Arizona during his senior year of high school, and they had their hands full with a daughter being treated for a brain tumor.

After the verdicts were read, Sabbota said Layne has long been punishing herself and referred to her continued grief and regret.

"I've been saying it all along: We can't do anything that she hasn't already done to herself," Sabbota said. "She punishes herself every day. The legal system does what the legal system does. The jury felt that it wasn't appropriate self-defense. "

PFT: NFL passes helmet rule? |? Ends tuck rule

The Commissioner?s traditional end-of-meetings press conference quickly morphed into a panel discussion, with a variety of coaches, executives, and officials explaining to the media (and, necessarily, to everyone else) the ins-and-outs of the new rule regarding the use of the helmet.

While Falcons president Rich McKay acknowledged that the new rule is a ?pretty major change,? the new rule is much narrower and limited than many believe.

The new rule prohibits ball carriers and defensive players from initiating contact in the open field with the crown of the helmet. ?The crown, as explained by Rams coach Jeff Fisher, is the top of the helmet. ?The facemask and hairline of the helmet may still be used to initiate contact.

Fisher emphasized that ball carriers will be permitted to protect themselves, by dropping their pads and dipping their helmets. ?A foul arises only if the top of the helmet is used to ram the opponent.

In that way, the new rule is an extension of the rule against spearing, which in NFL parlance means hitting a player who is on the ground with the crown (top) of the helmet.

Also, the blow with the top of the helmet must be ?forcible,? a know-it-when-you-see-it standard that could potentially cause reasonable minds to differ. ?As a result, the decision will be treated as a judgment call, not subject to replay review.

These types of hits are not rare. ?The league office studied every game during two weeks of the 2012 season ? Week 10 and Week 16 ? and determined that 11 total hits during those 32 games would have drawn flags. ?To the extent those numbers can be extrapolated, that?s one flag for illegal use of the crown of the helmet in the open field every three games.

McKay explained that the league hopes the new rule will trickle down to the lower levels of the sport, like other safety-related changes. ?McKay specifically pointed to the adoption of the horse-collar rule at the college and high school level.

So it?s not as bad as some think, and anyone who still doesn?t like it has plenty of time to work through the various stages of grief and arrive at acceptance before the Cowboys and Dolphins suit up in early August for the Hall of Fame game.
