Perry remains the GOP frontrunner, but gap with Romney narrows (The Ticket)

Amid bad debate reviews and a defeat at last weekend's Florida straw poll, Rick Perry is facing the most trying days of his 2012 candidacy so far. But he does have one thing going for him: He's still the frontrunner for the Republican nomination.

A new CNN/ORC International poll released Monday finds Perry with a smaller, but still notable advantage over his chief rival Mitt Romney. He leads Romney by 7 points, 28 percent to 21 percent. Two weeks ago, the same poll found Perry with a 12-point lead over Romney. The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 4.5 percent.

Some of Perry's momentum may have shifted to Newt Gingrich, whose support in the race doubled from 5 percent to 10 percent in the past two weeks.

The former House speaker is the only other GOP contender in double digits, according to the poll. Herman Cain, Ron Paul and Sarah Palin are tied at 7 percent; Michele Bachmann is at 4 percent; Rick Santorum is at 3 percent; and Jon Huntsman is at 1 percent.

When Palin is not included, the results are slightly but not substantially different. Perry jumps to 30 percent, followed by Romney (22 percent) and Gingrich (11 percent).

While Perry remains on top, the poll does offer some troubling data points for his campaign. Two weeks ago, Perry held a double-digit lead among both men and women, but there are now signs of a gender gap. Perry has a 17-point lead among male voters, while Romney has a 4-point lead among women.

The Texas governor has also seen a drop in support among Republicans who went to college. Earlier this month, he held a 13-point lead over Romney, but now the two are statistically tied. His 11-point lead over Romney among "suburban voters" has evaporated in the last two weeks, leaving the two tied at 28 percent support apiece.

Perhaps most troubling to his campaign, Perry has not improved on his performance against President Obama. According to the poll, Obama leads Perry in a projected match-up 51 percent to 46 percent among registered voters. By comparison, Obama and Romney are virtually tied, 49 percent to 48 percent.

Only Paul keeps pace with Romney and Perry against Obama. The president has a four point lead over the Texas congressman, 51 percent to 47 percent?a result that is within the poll's margin of error.

My best gal from college, Katie, is expecting her first baby! Hooray! Her sister asked me and our friend Jenn to handle the decorations for Katie?s baby shower. Since she?s only 80% sure that it?s a girl ? and she herself isn?t a pink frou-frou kind of girl, she wanted a simple and not overly feminine shower. The venue was a casual restaurant right on the Connecticut waterfront, with huge windows overlooking a small marina. Katie?s mom and sister set the alphabet theme with the invitations, and Jenn and I took it from there.

Since Katie?s family was donating flowers to the local children?s library in lieu of flowers, we wanted to put a simple pop of color on the tables. It started with fabulous free printable alphabet cards that I found on Pinterest, which I printed out at home on card stock. Since I wanted Katie to be able to reuse the cards in the nursery, I loosely taped two back-to-back and stuck them in wooden holders that were left over from my wedding (my dad made them from dowels). The designs have a sweet vintage charm and are just feminine enough ? the ?H? is represented by high heels!

Jenn made dozens of mini tissue paper pom poms and sprinkled them on the tables. To add a personal touch and even more color to the tables, I printed up these adorable ?Wishes for Baby? cards (in yellow) at my local Staples and put them at each place setting, along with a pen for the table. Throughout the lunch we encouraged people to fill out the cards, and Jenn collected them to make a scrapbook for the baby-to-be.

Coupled with a framed note from the party planners letting people know about the donation to the local library, the table decor was simple and sweet. Most importantly, the mommy-to-be liked it!

The one craft project that we didn?t get to do (because every craft store in the area was bizarrely out of wooden or cardboard ?B?s?) was create big tissue paper ?ABC? display for the dessert table. Since it?s such a perfect idea for an alphabet-themed baby shower, it?s worth sharing!

Since we used free printables and paper and other supplies that we had on hand, the total cost of outfitting a shower for 60 people was less than $25 (tissue paper from a discount store, printing the ?wishes cards? and a pack of cheap pens). Pretty darn good for an alphabet baby shower that put a smile on the guest of honor?s face!

I'm looking out my office window looking for you!" Then I went down the street and took a picture of Radio City Music Hall and said, "Guess where I am now?" I walked two more blocks, sat on a bench, and had a cup of coffee. All of the sudden this kid came up to me and goes, "Hey! I work in the neighborhood! I saw your tweets and I thought, I have to find you! I got a guy to cover for me at work because I had to try and get your autograph!" It was so funny. This kid was all out of breath and sweating and can you imagine him tracking my tweets? It killed me! So I took a picture with him and tweeted it.

In Mt. Juliet just outside of Nashville they are building a retirement community called Del Web. I heard the community is going to be completely self sufficient with it?s own housing, stores, food stores, entertainment, health care, and probably more stuff. I don?t know how much they start at but they are brand new and it should be finished next year or late this year.

And what remains they are. Remnants of supernovae tend to be seen as roundish clouds expanding symmetrically from the original explosion site, but the Centaurus remnant is shaped like a frying pan.

Fresh calculations confirm that this unique shape is not just a curiosity: it is a map of the supernova's entire history, which includes one of the fastest-moving stars in the galaxy.

Back in 1986, the original discovery team ? led by Michael Kesteven, then of the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada ? noted the odd shape of the remnant.

The team concluded that the supernova explosion hurled this stellar corpse from the blast site, leaving behind a glowing trail, which is still seen today as the handle of the frying pan.

The pulsar is unlikely to be an interloper that just happened to pass through the supernova remnant ? the odds of that are about 800 to 1, given that the remnant is relatively small and pulsars are few and far between, the team says.

Other glowing pulsar trails have been found, but this is the first that is connected all the way back to its supernova remnant. That makes it a record of the supernova's entire history, from the explosion right up to the dead core's current position.

"Most pulsar tails are too old ? the supernova remnant has already dissipated," says Ng.

Asymmetrical mystery

The pulsar is thought to have left the glowing trail because of the wind of energetic particles that it spews into the surrounding space. This wind ploughs into galaxy's interstellar gas, energising it and making it glow.

Based on the width of the trail, Ng's team estimates the pulsar's speed at between 1000 and 2000 kilometres per second. That could make it the fastest star known: the current record-holder is another neutron star, racing at 1500 kilometres per second from the Puppis A supernova remnant where it was born.

Such speeding neutron stars are a puzzle, because supernova explosions should be pretty symmetrical, making it unlikely that they would provide a strong kick in any one direction. Solving the puzzle of the frying pan's origin may have deepened another one.

Their presence has been speculated for decades as concentric ripples on the water surface are visible near the shore, but only with divers it was possible to detect this complex system of springs reaching 30 m depth. To locate and study these springs was quite a task for the scientific diving team, as the high salt concentration makes the diving dangerous and difficult. The divers located the springs and took water and sediment samples in which they detected novel microorganisms.

Until the 1950s the Dead Sea was getting its main water supply from the river Jordan. When this source was cut off to supply drinking water, the sea level of the Dead Sea started to drop at an alarming rate -- now decreasing by more than one meter per year. As a further consequence the Dead Sea changed dramatically. Since 1979 the lake has not been not stratified anymore but mixed from top to bottom due to changes in density of the upper water layers. It is difficult to estimate the total water balance of the lake, as several sources and sinks contribute, e. g. the submarine groundwater discharge, part of which derives from unidentified springs.

Novel microbial life in the focus

As far back as in the 1930s Hebrew University of Jerusalem researchers realized that the term 'Dead Sea' is inappropriate due to the presence of microorganisms. Prof. Aharon Oren, a collaborator on this project, has studied the Dead Sea since the 1980s, and observed blooms only twice: in 1980 and in 1992. Now Dead Sea microorganisms are again in the focus of scientists. An Israeli-German research team headed by Dr Danny Ionescu from the Microsensor Group at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology, Bremen, Germany took a very close look at two sites in the Dead Sea. Equipped with modern diving equipment and state of the art technology they located several springs and collected water samples. The researchers were surprised by the rich variety of microbial life in these water samples and in the vicinity of the springs. Around the springs they found mats of bacteria covering large seafloor areas containing considerable richness of species.

Dr Ionescu says: "These newly discovered bacteria are not the bacteria and algae which colored the Dead Sea in red as in 1992. We think our discovery will raise new questions. Some of these relate to the ability of these bacteria to survive in the Dead Sea, and the energy source feeding this ecosystem."

"The microbes in the Dead Sea water mainly belong to the domain Archaea and they number around 1,000-10,000 per ml (much lower than regular sea water). Never before have microbial mats or biofilms been found in the Dead Sea and not much is known about sediment bacteria in the Dead Sea," explain Ionescu.

The team is planning a follow-up expedition to the Dead Sea in October. "Among the microbial community of the biofilms we found phototrophs, sulfide oxidizers among many other organisms. Most of the findings rely on molecular analysis. Our next expedition in October 2011 will deal with the actual activity of these organisms, and the many more questions that arose from these findings," he said.

Hydrogeology

As part of the German funded SUMAR project research student Yaniv Munwes and Prof. Jonathan Laronne, Dept of Geography, Ben Gurion University of the Negev, developed a system to directly measure spring discharge and to study the structure of the upward, jet-like plume flow. This will allow a more accurate estimation of the water input into the Dead Sea by these springs.

The hydrological connection between springs occurring on land and submarines springs was in parallel studied by Dr Christian Siebert, Dr Stefan Geyer the PhD student Ulf Mallast from the Hemholtz Center for Environmental Research -- UFZ, Halle, Germany. The chemical analysis of the spring water showed that its composition is not a direct result of the freshwater and Dead Sea water mixing but other processes are involved as well.

PARIS (AP) - "He hurt his knee and will be out for the season." The throwaway words often used in soccer to describe players with serious injuries are woefully inadequate in helping us, the fans and laymen, understand just how tough, lonely and dispiriting the road back can be.

So congratulations to Hatem Ben Arfa, Stuart Holden and Owen Hargreaves, all remarkable survivors who are completing that journey this week. All make a very comfortable living from soccer. All knew before they got hurt that theirs is a contact sport with an inherent and elevated risk of injury, possibly permanent. No one forced them to play. They have all had top-notch medical care. But that doesn't mean that we shouldn't sympathize. Their singular determination to recover sufficiently to play again offers lessons on grit and determination that go beyond sports.

Pumped full of nervous excitement, Holden played the entire way for Bolton on Tuesday night, his first match since Manchester United defender Jonny Evans ripped open his left knee and fractured a bone with a studs-up tackle March 19. Before kickoff, Holden says he felt that all of the rehab, all of the long and boring hours spent immobilized on his couch, "all of the hard work and the sweat and tears and everything put into it over the last six months was more than worth it."

"That's what you think about the whole time, you know, is stepping back out onto the pitch," the midfielder said in a telephone interview Wednesday, still shivering from the ice bath he had just climbed out of. "Just for me, mentally, to keep myself going was tough at times."

Professional athletes aren't the only ones who feel miserable on crutches or in plaster. But because they can't return to work if they don't fully recover, they do face self-doubt and questions that perhaps the rest of us don't: Will I be the same player I used to be? Will I recover in time for next season? Will the team give my spot to someone else? Must I find a new team? Will I have to uproot my family?

"All of a sudden, all these questions will hit home to every single guy," says Paul Lake, the former Manchester City captain whose harrowing biography, "I'm Not Really Here," recounts how his promising career was cut short by injury.

Like actors who come alive for the camera, players need sizable egos to want to perform for the crowds. Falling out of the limelight because of injury and discovering that they are not invincible or irreplaceable can be a big shock, sports psychologists say. Where once they relied on their physical prowess, they suddenly find themselves reliant on others - doctors and trainers - and hoped-for recovery dates can be repeatedly pushed back, all making them feel that they no longer control their own destiny.

Lake says he used to obsess over his injured knee - "How is it feeling today? When I wake up, is it different today? Is it better?" - and try to be upbeat although, inside, he just wanted to hide away.

"I used to dread having to speak to people," he said in a phone interview. "I would do anything, I would run a mile, rather than have to be interviewed or have to walk past fans, because it wouldn't be, 'Are we going to win Saturday, Lakey?' ... I was asked, 'How is that knee of yours? When are you going to be back?' To which I'd lie and say, 'I'm back in six weeks."'

"Some nights I would just pace the room. It was the loneliest place," he said.

"I wouldn't recommend it to anyone," Hargreaves says in a video interview on Manchester City's Web site. The midfielder who shone for England at the 2006 World Cup hasn't completed a match for three years. Knees, hamstring, shoulder - they've all let him down. But he did not give up. Released by Manchester United, Hargreaves posted videos of himself training on YouTube to prove he was fit again and he persuaded City to take a gamble and sign him this August. Hargreaves started for City against Birmingham in the Carling Cup on Wednesday night, his first appearance with the club.

"It's difficult for people from the outside looking in. You'd think, 'There's something going wrong there. The guy is made out of glass,"' Hargreaves acknowledges. "I missed Champions League finals. I missed World Cups. I missed so many big games that I would have loved to be a part of, and it's difficult when you're in it and you're trying to find a solution to these things and you seem to not be going any further forward. It was incredibly frustrating."

Holden says he spent "hours upon hours on the couch and the only thing I could do was to crutch down to the local coffee shop just to get out of the house." Watching his Bolton teammates from the stands, he would "put on a brave face."

"It's more tough mentally than anything else because it's what you do for your livelihood. And, you know, (while) you're out there, people are competing for your places, people push themselves ahead of you. You don't wish an injury on anyone but sometimes it opens doors for other players," he said.

But rehabbing with other injured players helped: "You can pick each other up when you're having a down day, you rely on those close to you, you rely on your friends, your family, you rely on anyone, really, to give you a boost and to remind you all that it's going to be worth it once you're back out there playing."

Ben Arfa broke the tibia and fibula of his left leg last October. The France international told Le Parisien daily that he counted down the hours Tuesday before his comeback match for Newcastle that night and afterward felt "filled with happiness. I'm alive again."

Holden echoed those thoughts.

"I've become an expert in rehab at this point, but I hope that this is the last time I have to do that," he said. "Once you get back on the field, you make that first tackle, you make that first pass, and it goes along way to pushing yourself back to 100 percent."
