Hermann Mair came into the world in the year 1972, on December 7th in the Austrian city of Altenmarkt. He was trained by his ski master father, but in the beginning, he did not like ski racing. He enrolled at the academy at Schlaming at the age of fifteen, but they sent him back because he was too short. He then became a bricklayer during the summer and took the job as a ski trainer in the winter.
Hermann Mair was strong spirited and was not to be stopped. Though he did not attend the World Cup in Austria, he won the championships in Salzburg and Tyrol. However, in the year 1996 he was just a forerunner in the World Cup in Austria, when he was timed with the 12th fastest skier in the run for the Great Cup at Flachau. So the national coaches could not, but put him up for the World Cup. This put him up to a brilliant global vocation.
It was in Garmisch-Partenkirchen that he won his first world championship. From there his status as a great skier, traveled ahead of him all the time. Hermann Mair was soon the hero of ski racing in the Alpine circuit. He progressed to win the giant Slalom and Super-G. Once, when he was racing downhill, he was thrown off the course. He went tumbling down, head over heels and then he crashed into the protective B-netting. Everyone was amazed when he got up as if nothing had happened. For this act, he was named the ?Hetmintor?. Immediate to this incident he conquered the winter Olympics that was held in Nagano.
After that there was no looking back for him, as his winning streak continued unabated. His win included the comprehensive title and the championships in giant Slalom and the downhill Super-G, in the years 2000 and 2001.
Hermann Mair was at a very high point in his career when he met with a nearly fatal accident. He was returning from a training session in Austria when his motorcycle collided with a car, resulting in a serious accident that almost cost him a leg. At first the surgeons wanted to amputate his lower leg. They later conducted a massive reconstructive surgery and saved his leg. Everybody thought that this was the end of his career. He could not even walk. However, he surprised everyone by starting to train only months after his accident.
Hermann Mair returned to the world cup in the year 2002 and was able to win the World Cup by 2003. In 2004, he won the overall World Championship. The same year he was appreciated for his comeback spirit and was conferred the Laureus Award.
As of now he has to his credit, 53 international cups, and has come 1st, 2nd, 3rd places 93 times. Hermann Mair now holds the second position in the world ranking. He is second only to Ingemar Stenmark, who has 86 victories to his credit. However, he could not notch up any victories in the years 2006 and 2007.
The 2009 season on 30th November saw him win the Super G again. This was his first victory in three years, and he just earned his 54th cup of a world cup event, and that too a week prior to his birthday. On October 13th, in the year 2009, Hermann Mair gave the world notice that he would no longer be skiing professionally.
