First base by committee: With Moreland on DL, Washington will rotate Young, Napoli, Snyder

From Rangers beat writer Evan Grant

ARLINGTON ? Mitch Moreland will miss at least four weeks with a significant strain of his left hamstring, but the Rangers won?t be scrambling to fill his spot.

The Rangers placed Moreland on the 15-day disabled list Friday after an MRI revealed the severity of the strain. The club said Moreland could miss up to six weeks.

Manager Ron Washington said the Rangers would use a combination of Michael Young, Mike Napoli and Brandon Snyder at first base. Napoli played first Friday with Young at third base so Adrian Beltre could take a day as DH.

The Rangers plan to rotate players, including outfielders, through the DH position. That could create some at-bats for outfielder Leonys Martin against right-handers. The Rangers? plan for the time being is to keep Martin at the major league level.

?With Michael [Young] playing more first, there should be open DH at-bats,? general manager Jon Daniels said. ?[Washington] has talked about using that spot to rotate some of the outfielders through. There should be a decent number of [at-bats] for Leonys vs. right-handed pitching. We?re pretty right-handed overall. Let?s let it play out.?

The Rangers don?t really have any attractive options to replace Moreland as the full-time first baseman from within the system. Elite prospect Mike Olt, primarily a third baseman, did play first for Double-A Frisco on Thursday but was back at third Friday. Daniels downplayed the possibility the Rangers might pursue an established big leaguer for the spot such as Kansas City outfielder Jeff Francoeur.
