DreamWorks Animation Planning Theme Park in New Jersey | The ...

Watch out, New Jersey -- Shrek is coming your way.

DreamWorks Animation announced Wednesday that the company is launching a theme park based on its films at the American Dream complex at New Jersey's Meadowlands.

The park, which will be an enclosed indoor facility, is being created with multinational conglomerate Triple Five Worldwide, which includes American Dream among its assets, and will feature characters from DreamWorks films including "Shrek, "How to Train Your Dragon," "Kung Fu Panda," "Puss in Boots" and "Madagascar."

The character-driven entertainment destination will include themed rides and attractions, along with retail venues, a water park, an ice-skating rink, an indoor ski park and theaters. Plans also call for 1.7 million square feet of retail space, along with 150,000 square feet of dining and restaurant space.

DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said that the park will be "a one-of-a-kind retail and entertainment destination in North America" that will "incorporate DreamWorks Animation characters, storytelling and technology into a unique and innovative family entertainment experience at the venue."

Triple Five president Don Ghermezian added that the park "will have direct input from the creative talents behind the films."

According to the Los Angeles Times, the American Dream complex, which was originally scheduled to open in 2007 but has remained vacant, isn't the first venue that DreamWorks has eyed for a theme park. The company had previously considered a park in Dubai, but plans fell through.
